Experimenting with plants

Yesterday we started an experiment to observe how plants suck up water through their roots and stems.

We got 4 large white flowers (from Mrs Davies' garden - thanks Mrs Davies!)
We placed them into containers of water. The FIRST flower was placed in WATER ONLY - this was our control.
We put 5 teaspoons of yellow dye in the next container, 5 teaspoon of blue dye in the next.

We cut the stem of the last flower in half and placed half in yellow water and half in blue water.

We made predictions about what would happen. We left them overnight. When we got to school this morning, we noticed some big changes!

Here's what we saw ....

Plants suck up water from the base of the plant, up through the stem, into the leaves and flowers through the veins. The water also escapes out of the leaves and petals through tiny holes called stomata. This process is called TRANSPIRATION.

Identifying Trees

We've been learning to identify trees around our school.
Last week we got into groups, and had coloured photos of various tree leaves. We had to find the real trees and take a small leaf cutting of each.
When we collected all nine, we matched them up onto a grid. It was quite challenging, but we mostly got them without clues from Mrs Atkins.

We also learnt which trees around our school are natives. We found ...
Totara, lemonwood, cabbage trees (kouka), kowhai and ti toki.

Here are some photos...

Dinosaurs At School!

OH MY GOSH!   Today, while we were eating lunch, a pack of crazy dinosaurs ran around terrifying everyone! T-Rex's to be specific.

Where did they come from?
We though dinosaurs were extinct!
One tried to steal one of the kid's lunch box!

Identifying Trees

Today, as part of our topic on The Forest, we learnt to identify some trees that we see in New Zealand. We looked at the pictures of trees on board, then had to match up similar pictures in our books. We learnt the name of NATIVE trees and INTRODUCED trees.
We have also learnt about the 5 different layers of the forest.

Pet Day

Yesterday was Pet Day. The back field was bustling with NUMEROUS animals. ('Numerous' is our Word Of The Week!)

There were many lambs, calves and several horses, dogs and goats. Inside the hall were our displays of the rural-themed art every class has been working on since last term. We were very proud of our Pom Pom Animals and Rustic Flowers.

Here are some photos from the day ...

Wheels Day

Today was Wheels Day. Everyone loved getting on their wheels - scooters, roller blades, roller skates, and hover boards.
We were very lucky with the weather - it didn't rain even though the dark clouds were threatening!

The best part was of course having a chocolate bar at lunchtime.

Thanks so much Kauri for organising this fun event.

Today we had an awesome dance session with Steff, from Dance Unlimited. We learnt some new moves and grooves to a song from Hairspray (the musical).
It was cool to come up with our own poses and dance with a buddy. Some moves were tricky and there were lots of quick changes from one movement to the next, but we persevered and kept trying!

Floating and Sinking

Today Room 5 did a floating and sinking experiment. We were given various objects and had to predict whether they would float or sink. Then we tested these objects and recorded our findings.
We made conclusions based on the results.

We worked out that the objects that had a WIDE surface area tended to float - and the objects that were HEAVY FOR THEIR SIZE tended to sink.

Do you agree or disagree with this statement:

We disagreed and GAVE EVIDENCE based on our testing.

eg; I disagree because the cotton ball was LIGHT but it sank because it absorbed water and became

I disagree because the tin foil was LIGHT  but it sank because when placed on its side, it had a
     narrow surface area

Then, just for fun, we got with our learning buddies and made a boat out of tin foil. We tested them out to see which boat design would hold the most amount of logs (tens blocks).

So far, Emily and Bella's boat is winning - it held 30 tens blocks. We'll see if anyone can beat that tomorrow!

Tessellation Creations

Today, as part of our Geometry topic in Maths, we experimented tessellating shapes.
Tessellating shapes are shapes that you can fit together without any gaps.

Robot Challenge

Our Maths topic is Geometry. We are learning about 2 and 3D shapes, and position and orientation.
Today we practised using 'Left' and Right', doing 1/4, 12 and 3/4 turns left and right.

Some of us buddied up. One buddy was the 'robot' who was blindfolded. The other  buddy had to guide them through a maze (of chairs) by giving them instructions using 'left, 'right' and 'quarter, half and three quarter turns'.

We had to lead our buddy to finish on a mat. We all made it! (Although we DID have a couple of robot collisions)

Buddy Class

This week, Room 5 have been designing a Space Race game to show off our knowledge of the Solar System. We recreated the Snakes and Ladders game - to make it rocket boosts (instead of ladders) and black holes (instead of snakes).
We added extra information into some of the squares to show off our understanding.

Today we joined our buddy class, Room 3, and played our awesome games with them.

Disco Fever!

On Friday, it was the school disco. Room 5 joined in with the junior classes for a bit of a boogie and lollies. We felt ECSTATIC! (That's our Word Of The Week)
We especially enjoyed doing the LIMBO! We reckon it was harder for our class because we're taller than most of the others!!!!

Thanks to the student council for organising and running this fun event.

Te Manawa Trip

Yesterday our class went to Te Manawa Museum to learn more about space.
We watched a cool movie about a family of aliens who were searching for the 'perfect planet' to live in. After looking at all the different atmospheres and temperatures of other planets, they thought Earth was the BEST planet to live on.

We went into the Star Lab and watched the star constellations on the roof of the dome. It was AMAZING! We learnt more about Matariki, and now we know when and where in the sky we can see this cool star cluster.

Afterwards, we went to the Esplanade and had lots of fun on the playground.

Thanks to all our wonderful parent helpers who provided transport.

Crazy Day Fun

Today was CRAZY DAY at school. We had lots of fun laughing at each other's crazy costumes. Some of us had very original ideas about what looked crazy.

At lunch, we munched into delicious chicken burgers.

Thanks Matai, for organising this fun event!

Having Fun At Lunch Time

I caught these crazy monkeys on the swing today, just 'hangin' around'.
It's great to see our Halcombe students so happy with their friends.

I love how well you relate to each other, and include new people in your games.

Tortoise And Hare Show

Today we had the Playhouse Theatre come to school to entertain us with their Tortoise And The Hare show.

It was the story of how the hare (who was a complete show-off) bragged about how he would beat the slow Tortoise. In the end, the Tortoise decided not to try to win the race, but to help the Hare, you was captured by the evil Pied Piper. (Yes .... it wasn't exactly the traditional story).

Back in class we had a discussion about what the message might be behind the story.  We agreed there was a strong message that winning isn't everything.

What is a square metre?

So what does one square metre look like?
That was what we explored in Maths today.
Last year, Emily reckoned we could fit 17 children inside 1 square metre.  Today we tried to beat that record ... and we did!

Check out this photo!

Cute Baby!

Yesterday we had a visit from a very new person to this world ...
Maddison! (Miss Johnson's baby AND Paige's baby sister)

We think she is very cute. We're glad to hear she's mostly sleeping through the night.

Here she is ...

Buddy Class

Today our buddy class, Room 3, came to visit.'
We shared our published stories and gave feedback on these.
Afterwards, we demonstrated how to do rakau. We are still practising this, because it requires a LOT of concentration and co-ordination.

We look forward to doing more with our little buddies this term.

For Maths, we are learning about measurement.
We've been estimating and measuring length using cm and m.
Today we estimated distances in metres with a buddy, then measured.
We are gaining a better understanding of using standard units of measurement, and how to measure accurately.

Koru Art

Today Room 5 children created beautiful koru art patterns. We traced around koru shapes onto black paper and cut around these. We glued them onto a white and black background.

We think our Koru patterns look stunning.

The koru is a symbol of new life/growth.

Wheels Day Fun

Today was Wheels Day. Everyone in Room 5 brought a set of wheels to school.
We had fun zooming around the school on our scooters, drift bikes, skateboards and roller blades.
At lunchtime, some of us enjoyed a sausage (or two).

Thanks to the School Council kids for organising and running this fun event.

Senior Swimming Sports

Yesterday was the Senior School Swimming sports at Makino Pool.
For most of room 5, this was the FIRST time we had been there for swimming sports.
Adjectives we have to describe our experience are ...

COLD!   Fun!  Fantastic!  FREEZING! Breathtaking
Challenging, tiring, awesome, nerve-wracking, boring (having to wait), scary and entertaining.

Here are some photos of the day ...

Merry Christmas everyone!

Today is the last day of school for 2019!  Yeehah!
