Te Manawa Trip

Yesterday our class went to Te Manawa Museum to learn more about space.
We watched a cool movie about a family of aliens who were searching for the 'perfect planet' to live in. After looking at all the different atmospheres and temperatures of other planets, they thought Earth was the BEST planet to live on.

We went into the Star Lab and watched the star constellations on the roof of the dome. It was AMAZING! We learnt more about Matariki, and now we know when and where in the sky we can see this cool star cluster.

Afterwards, we went to the Esplanade and had lots of fun on the playground.

Thanks to all our wonderful parent helpers who provided transport.

Crazy Day Fun

Today was CRAZY DAY at school. We had lots of fun laughing at each other's crazy costumes. Some of us had very original ideas about what looked crazy.

At lunch, we munched into delicious chicken burgers.

Thanks Matai, for organising this fun event!

Having Fun At Lunch Time

I caught these crazy monkeys on the swing today, just 'hangin' around'.
It's great to see our Halcombe students so happy with their friends.

I love how well you relate to each other, and include new people in your games.

Tortoise And Hare Show

Today we had the Playhouse Theatre come to school to entertain us with their Tortoise And The Hare show.

It was the story of how the hare (who was a complete show-off) bragged about how he would beat the slow Tortoise. In the end, the Tortoise decided not to try to win the race, but to help the Hare, you was captured by the evil Pied Piper. (Yes .... it wasn't exactly the traditional story).

Back in class we had a discussion about what the message might be behind the story.  We agreed there was a strong message that winning isn't everything.

What is a square metre?

So what does one square metre look like?
That was what we explored in Maths today.
Last year, Emily reckoned we could fit 17 children inside 1 square metre.  Today we tried to beat that record ... and we did!

18!

Check out this photo!

Cute Baby!

Yesterday we had a visit from a very new person to this world ...
Maddison! (Miss Johnson's baby AND Paige's baby sister)

We think she is very cute. We're glad to hear she's mostly sleeping through the night.

Here she is ...

Buddy Class

Today our buddy class, Room 3, came to visit.'
We shared our published stories and gave feedback on these.
Afterwards, we demonstrated how to do rakau. We are still practising this, because it requires a LOT of concentration and co-ordination.

We look forward to doing more with our little buddies this term.

Measuring

For Maths, we are learning about measurement.
We've been estimating and measuring length using cm and m.
Today we estimated distances in metres with a buddy, then measured.
We are gaining a better understanding of using standard units of measurement, and how to measure accurately.

Koru Art

Today Room 5 children created beautiful koru art patterns. We traced around koru shapes onto black paper and cut around these. We glued them onto a white and black background.

We think our Koru patterns look stunning.

The koru is a symbol of new life/growth.

We had fun zooming around the school on our scooters, drift bikes, skateboards and roller blades.
At lunchtime, some of us enjoyed a sausage (or two).

Senior Swimming Sports

Yesterday was the Senior School Swimming sports at Makino Pool.
For most of room 5, this was the FIRST time we had been there for swimming sports.
Adjectives we have to describe our experience are ...

COLD!   Fun!  Fantastic!  FREEZING! Breathtaking
Challenging, tiring, awesome, nerve-wracking, boring (having to wait), scary and entertaining.

Here are some photos of the day ...

Learning Buddies

Phew, what a busy week! It's strange coming back to school and having a new name - Mrs Atkins!
Room 5 children are doing a fantastic job of calling me by my new name!

This week we started Home Learning. Most children are practising spelling words at home, as well as practising some basic facts and reading their library book.
Today we worked with our learning buddies who tested us on our spelling words. Most of us got them all right because we practised during the week.

School Picnic

Today all of Halcombe School went to Totara Reserve for our school picnic. We joined our buddy class (R3) and had fun activities such as playing on the playground, going for a bush walk, playing with the parachute, relays and a scavenger hunt.  Harold the Giraffe even came to visit us!

After lunch, we all got to have a swim in the river. It was SO refreshing! What a great day! And because we were all so well behaved, we were given the next day off school!  (Or it could be that tomorrow is Waitangi Day).

Buddy Class

Today we had our first fun activity with our little buddies from Room 3.
After having a chat and introducing ourselves, we went to the pool for some serious fun!

It was awesome having piggy back races and noodle ride races. We even towed our little buddies around on noodles, while making a whirlpool. It's amazing how fast we traveled!

Room 5 is a straight Year 4 class this year. There are 10 girls and 17 boys.

We are looking forward to working and playing hard this year, and having lots of fun on the journey.

Today we buddied up with a classmate, and practiced playing some maths games. Here are some photos ....
